The man is the very first person to wear and also control the <strong>Laboratory&rsquo;s modular prosthetic limbs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before putting the prosthetics on, they had to do a <strong>surgery<\/strong> for <strong>targeted muscle reinnervation,<\/strong> a new surgical procedure that <strong>reassigns nerves<\/strong> that once <strong>controlled arms and hands<\/strong>. By reassigning existing nerves, researchers make it possible for people suffering from <strong>upper-arm amputations<\/strong> to <strong>control<\/strong>\u00a0their prosthetic<strong>\u00a0by merely thinking<\/strong> about the to performed movement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&lsquo;We use <strong>pattern<\/strong> <strong>recognition algorithms<\/strong> to identify individual muscles that are contracting, how well they <strong>communicate<\/strong> with each other, and their amplitude and frequency,&rsquo;\u00a0<strong>Johns Hopkins Trauma Surgeon Albert Chi<\/strong> explained. Those information are then used to <strong>translate<\/strong> them into <strong>movements<\/strong> within the prothesis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Customised <strong>sockets<\/strong> for the <strong>shoulder<\/strong> to <strong>support the limb prosthetics<\/strong> ensure the connection with the previously reinnervated nerves.
