After effective treatments such as <strong>chemotherapy<\/strong> and <strong>radiotherapy,<\/strong> many women are at risk of being\u00a0<strong>left infertile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Scientists<\/strong> from the <strong>Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark<\/strong> are working to create an<strong> artificial ovary<\/strong> made from<strong> human tissue and eggs<\/strong> that could help women eventually conceive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the 1970\u2019s men have had the option of <strong>sperm banking<\/strong> when about to undergo <strong>fertility-compromising treatments.<\/strong> Unlike their male counterparts,\u00a0<strong>fertility preservation has been logistically challenging<\/strong>\u00a0for women. It also\u00a0<strong>costs ten times more<\/strong> than what it costs to preserve semen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a <strong>three-day chemical process<\/strong>, Danish researchers have been able to <strong>grow human follicles on artificial ovaries<\/strong> made of\u00a0<strong>ovarian tissue<\/strong> from <strong>cancer patients<\/strong>. The tissue taken from the patient was removed from the cells which left a \u201c<strong>scaffold<\/strong>\u201d of the original tissue. The early stage follicles are then attached to it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The hope<\/strong> is that this could <strong>restore a woman\u2019s fertility<\/strong> by implanting the ovary back into the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe beauty of this is that many of the women who are having ovarian grafts can go and get <strong>pregnant naturally,<\/strong> and don&rsquo;t need to go through IVF.\u201d Says <strong>Stuart Lavery<\/strong>, a <strong>consultant gynaecologist<\/strong> and <strong>reproductive surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>artificial ovary<\/strong>\u00a0would also help women with issues such as a multiple sclerosis and the blood disorder beta thalassaemia<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ariella Shikanov, biomedical engineer<\/strong> from the <strong>University of Michigan<\/strong> says, \u201cIt\u2019s the next step towards a <strong>big discovery<\/strong>, where we can actually get <strong>fertilizable human ovocytes<\/strong> [eggs].\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite it being considered as \u201c<strong>exciting development<\/strong>\u201d by <strong>Nick Macklon, medical director at London Women\u2019s Clinic<\/strong>, there is still further research that needs to be conducted for it to prove its <strong>effectiveness on humans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep sep-none\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:;\"><\/div><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #a36160;\">References<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000;\">New Scientist .July 2 2018.
