For the first time<\/strong> in the United States, a woman who received a uterus transplant gave birth to a baby<\/strong>. The anonymous patient was born without<\/strong> a uterus<\/strong> and received a transplant<\/strong> about a year ago at Baylor University Medical Center<\/a> in Dallas, Texas.<\/p>\n

Uterus transplants<\/strong> are seen as hope for women who are born without one or had it removed because of cancer.\u00a0The womb donors<\/strong> can be dead or alive<\/strong> and in order to be eligible to receive these wombs the\u00a0patients must be 20-35 years old<\/strong> with healthy<\/strong> and normal ovaries <\/strong>(Sifferlin, 2017).<\/p>\n

These transplants are meant to be temporary<\/strong>, the women can have one<\/strong> or two children<\/strong> and then needs to have it removed so she can stop the immune-suppressing drugs to prevent organ rejection (Grady, 2017).<\/p>\n

Both Dr. Johannesson<\/a><\/span> and Dr. Testa<\/a><\/span> said that huge part of their motivation comes from knowing that these women are devastated\u00a0from finding\u00a0out that they\u00a0will not be able to have children.<\/p>\n

Even though the process<\/strong> is complicated<\/strong> and the pregnancies are at high-risk<\/strong>, these transplants bring more hope<\/strong> to women without a uterus<\/strong>\u00a0!<\/p>\n
