{"id":16429,"date":"2017-12-27T10:29:33","date_gmt":"2017-12-27T10:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/strammer.com\/?p=16429"},"modified":"2017-12-27T10:29:33","modified_gmt":"2017-12-27T10:29:33","slug":"prosthetic-thumb-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/strammer.com\/es\/prosthetic-thumb-video\/","title":{"rendered":"The Third Thumb: A 3D-Printed Prosthetic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-center fusion-title-size-one\"><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-left\"><div class=\"title-sep sep-double sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#7daac4;\"><\/div><\/div><h1 class=\"title-heading-center\"><span style=\"color: #7daac4;\">\u00ab\u00a0The Third thumb\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><\/h1><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-right\"><div class=\"title-sep sep-double sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#7daac4;\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep sep-none\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:;\"><\/div><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The<strong> prosthetic thumb<\/strong> is not meant to replace another body part, it&rsquo;s a <strong>third thumb<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniclodedesign.com\/product-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dani Clode<\/a>, a grad student at London&rsquo;s Royal College of Art created <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daniclodedesign.com\/thethirdthumb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Third Thumb<\/a>.\u00a0It is A<strong>\u00a03D-printed prosthetic<\/strong> which clips on to your hand and serves as an<strong> extension to your body<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The third thumb is made out of<strong> three<\/strong> main <strong>3D-printed parts<\/strong>. All of the parts are connected via a <strong>bowden\u00a0brake system<\/strong> (similar to a bike brake). 3D printing is\u00a0ideal for this project, as it enables <strong>quick prototyping<\/strong> and a <strong>customised design<\/strong> so the thumb can come in<strong> different sizes<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You strap on the thumb to your hand which connects to a bracelet containing wires and servos. The thumb works using<strong>\u00a0pressure sensors<\/strong>\u00a0that sit under the\u00a0<strong>soles of your feet<\/strong>; if you press down with one foot the thumb will make a grasping movement and sends it to the\u00a0<strong>wrist unit via Bluetooth<\/strong>. It sounds a bit complicated, but\u00a0we already have a strong connection between our hands and feet, for example when we\u00a0are driving a car.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Furthermore, the prosthetic thumb can be used for a <strong>variety of functions<\/strong> as seen in the <strong>video<\/strong>.
