class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-right\"><div class=\"title-sep sep-double sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#a36160;\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A\u00a0study\u00a0claims\u00a0that medications commonly used to\u00a0fight\u00a0some <strong>physical\u00a0health\u00a0diseases<\/strong> could\u00a0bring\u00a0significant benefits to\u00a0people\u00a0with <strong>critical mental illnesses<\/strong>, like <strong>schizophrenia<\/strong> and <strong>bipolar disorder<\/strong>.\u00a0The\u00a0study, published in the\u00a0journal\u00a0JAMA\u00a0Psychiatry,\u00a0assessed\u00a0the\u00a0health\u00a0data records of 142,691\u00a0patients\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>serious<\/strong>\u00a0mental illness\u00a0(SMI)\u00a0in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Researchers\u00a0from the\u00a0Karolinska\u00a0Institute in Sweden and the University College London\u00a0(UCL),\u00a0in the UK, analysed\u00a0patients&rsquo;\u00a0health\u00a0records\u00a0relating\u00a0to <strong>self-harm<\/strong> and <strong>psychiatric hospitalisation<\/strong>.\u00a0The\u00a0team\u00a0assessed\u00a0patients\u00a0who were\u00a0prescribed\u00a0<strong>statins used for\u00a0cholesterol\/heart disease, L-type calcium channel antagonists\u00a0(LTCC)\u00a0to\u00a0decrease\u00a0high\u00a0blood pressure <\/strong>and <strong>biguanides for\u00a0diabetes<\/strong>.\u00a0They\u00a0checked\u00a0if the\u00a0episodes\u00a0of self-harm and psychiatric distress occurred when mental health\u00a0patients\u00a0were taking any of these prescribed medications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was\u00a0discovered\u00a0that exposure to any of the\u00a0drugs\u00a0studied was\u00a0observed\u00a0to be\u00a0associated\u00a0with <strong>reduced psychiatric hospitalisation rates<\/strong>.\u00a0Dr Joseph Hayes\u00a0(UCL\u00a0Psychiatry)\u00a0and his\u00a0team\u00a0found\u00a0that these cheap\u00a0common\u00a0medicines helped\u00a0<strong>reduce<\/strong>\u00a0the symptoms\u00a0patients\u00a0with severe mental illnesses.\u00a0Self-harm decreased for\u00a0people\u00a0affect\u00a0by a bipolar disorder and schizophrenia\u00a0patients\u00a0during\u00a0exposure\u00a0to these\u00a0drugs, and in\u00a0patients\u00a0with\u00a0psychosis\u00a0using L-type calcium channel antagonists.\u00a0<strong>A 10 to 20%<\/strong>\u00a0reduction\u00a0in the\u00a0number\u00a0of\u00a0episodes\u00a0was\u00a0discovered.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr James\u00a0MacCabe\u00a0at the Institute of Psychiatry at the King\u2019s College London\u00a0said, \u201cThese findings\u00a0are very compelling and\u00a0strongly\u00a0suggest a potential role for repurposing these\u00a0drugs\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>improve<\/strong>\u00a0mental health outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00ab\u00a0All three\u00a0studied\u00a0drugs\u00a0are globally licensed, commonly used, cheap and relatively safe medications.\u00a0They\u00a0are, therefore, ideal candidates for <strong>repurposing<\/strong>,\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0Dr.Hayes\u00a0said.\u00a0The\u00a0researchers\u00a0at University College London\u00a0say\u00a0their\u00a0findings\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0<strong>enormous potential<\/strong>.\u00a0And now, they and other independent experts are in plans to\u00a0undertake\u00a0clinical trials to authenticate and\u00a0implement\u00a0these\u00a0results\u00a0on a large
