Scoliosis consists of a curvature of the spine as well as a rotation of the vertebral bodies. A spinal curvature of at least 10 degrees is considered scoliosis, however that curve size would not show any signs or symptoms. As the curve progresses to 20 degrees or beyond, there is a bigger chance that the patient might notice abnormalities; such as the body titling to one side. The cause of this is actually unknown, and is not due to carrying heavy books or sleeping on the side.

Minimally Invasive Scoliosis Surgery is a type of procedure done to fix scoliosis and helps to correct an abnormal curve. During the surgery, a device called the tubular retractor is inserted into the back which lets the surgeon reach the spine with small tools. The surgeon then attaches rods and screws to the spine to help make it straighter. This is a new procedure mostly used for children and is not yet available everywhere. However, it is very effective and reduces the abnormal curve in the spine to prevent it from progressing further and getting worse.
