Alzheimer’s Eye Testing

Eye test to help detect Early Alzheimer’s

Eye testing can be a possibility for  early Alzheimer’s detection. Just like eye tests could help diagnose autism, they can also help detect early signs of Alzheimer’s, before the symptoms even occur.

Research at Washington University of School of Medicine in St. Louis has shown that this early detection will potentially lead to non-invasive and rapid testing for the condition.

Bliss E. O’Bryhim, MD, PhD says; “This technique has great potential to become a screening tool that helps decide who should undergo more expensive and invasive testing for Alzheimer’s disease prior to the appearance of clinical symptoms.”

The study showed that researchers who examined the eyes of people who had died from Alzheimer’s showed signs of thinning in the retina and degradation of the optic nerve.

Although more studies need to be performed to conclude these findings. There is great hope for early discoveries of Alzheimer’s through eye testing.
